Clippers & Packet Ships

‘Cutty Sark’                                                                                                          (click on the image to return to the previous page)

British clipper launched 1869 at Scot and Linterns shipyard, Dunbarton, Scotland.

At 930 tonnes, small in comparison with American clippers but Cutty Sark, and her rival ship Thermopaylae, have been considered the fastest clippers ever.

She is now permanently on show in dry dock at Greenwich, London. A favorite attraction for visitors.

Famous as a tea clipper, she regularly sailed to China to bring back a cargo of tea. The first cargo to reach London each year fetched a premium of 10s a tonne, and a bonus of  £100 for the captain.

This painting was a commission from Royal Dalton to be reproduced for one of a series of collectors plates. The image for the plate was achieved by forming a circle around the central feature of the ships, and masking the surrounding area.
