‘Flying Fish’                                                                        (click on the image to return to the previous page)

Extreme clipper launched in September 185 from the yard of Donald McKay at East Boston.

Her length was 198’6”, her breath 38’2” and draft 22’ with a deadrise of 25’. She weighed 1505 tons.

Not unlike the Flying Cloud in appearance, but her ends were shaper and her figurehead was a green and gold flying fish. The owners were Sampson and Tappan of Boston.

Surprisingly, considering that on all her outward and return passages she left port during a season unfavourable for fast runs, her record is phenomenal.

All her departures from Eastern ports to San Franciso were in September, October or November, yet her average time was 26 days.
