Nantucket is an Indian word meaning far away land. In this case one of a small group of islands off the coast of Massachusetts.

In the past, Nantucket was an important whaling port but was handicapped by a developing sand bank that eventually made it impossible to dock. The last Whaler left seeking whale in 1869.

Since then it has become a popular summer resort serviced over the years by many sidewheelers.

She had a veritable lifeline to the Islands on the Woodshole, Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket rim.

My painting is of one of these, with Nantucket harbor in the background.
